URBAN METHOD

All-Vocal Hip Hop

Urban Method at the Paramount

Posted by steighne On February - 27 - 2012

Urban Method Group ShotA quick thanks to all of those who helped us pack the house at the Paramount Theater last night in Denver. We had a chance to unveil an original song, some cool new tricks, and rock the songs you came to love from the show. Make sure you tag yourself on the Facebook pic Tony took on stage!

So what’s next?

Now it’s time to put it all together. We’re going to hit the studio and write. That’s right, original music. We’ll be putting music videos together, creating new and exciting content, and building OUR show. The plan is to have that done by summer time (2012) and then hit the road.

Until then…

thank you so much. Our friends, our family, and our newest supporters….we couldn’t do this without you!

Much love.

Listen Up!

Well, happy Thursday, Urban Method folks! It’s Kim Dawson again with some lovely tidbits for your eyes and ears.

I’m a jazz vocalist and a huge jazz fan. I often find that people don’t really like jazz because they think that it’s cheesy or it’s slow or it’s too complicated. Or, they think it’s old folks’ music, and you can’t really groove at all to it. I say, bah! There are so many different styles of jazz out there. Jazz isn’t always a saxophone playing a lot of loud notes at lightning speed, doing something only music nerds can really appreciate. And it isn’t cheesy songs that Las Vegas lounge musicians sing while lying across a grand piano. There are a lot of amazing jazz musicians, and notably, a lot of amazing YOUNG jazz musicians, making some awesome music out there. My favorite thing about music is that each genre, style, or what-have-you continues to evolve. You can find elements of latin music, r&b, hip hop, and classical music in it. And that’s why I love it! Music is just awesome! Here are some of my favorite jazz musicians out there today. Happy listening!

1. Gretchen Parlato

2. Esperanza Spalding

3. Kurt Elling

UM 1st Show Reaction

Posted by steighne On September - 20 - 2011

Care of Myke and Katie from Urban Method, here is a reaction to the first show (and the first week leading up to the taping) of NBC’s The Sing-Off. The show is in it’s 3rd season and we sang Eminem’s Love the Way You Lie.

Denver Media Shoot

Posted by steighne On July - 25 - 2011

urbanmethodWe just finished up a video and photo shoot all over downtown Denver! We’d like to begin with a huge shout out to Lannie Garrett for letting us use the Clock Tower theater for 2 of the sessions. Awesome theater and Jefferson, Vegas, Paul and Selene were a huge help in making it happen–thanks guys.

All in all, we took 3 full 12+ hour days putting together all kinds of promo materials. We made stops all over Downtown Denver in the onslaught of Denver’s 100 degree days! Nothing like wearing full outfits we’d wear on stage while sunbathing! We could have used 8 I.V.s by the end of it all! On top of the outfits, we had ourselves outfitted with lapel mics and packs to pick up all the sound. It was a grueling experience and we each got to experience the full capacity of our lungs and performance abilities.

The best part of everything was finding a way to re-engage with the songs each time we sang them. It was an opportunity to move from execution to full embodiment. I believe that every time you sing something, play something, or (re)create something, you become closer to its origin. Performing somebody else’s song takes more than just learning it…we must move beyond it or rather into it. The toll it takes on the body is that the mind must switch to a deeper place on demand and the the body follows what it feels. You begin to sense the pain or joy or sadness or longing in the music and you feel your heart in your throat, the knot in your stomach, the pounding in your head.
